Our 4(.0) Favorite Updates for WordPress 4.0

WordPress 4.0 is scheduled to release on August 13th, 2014.  One of our favorite CMS’s is getting a litany of new features that will improve the user experience. In this article I’ll be discussing some of our favorite new features and how to give 4.0 a test drive.

WordPress 4.0 contains many enhancements that users have been requesting for quite some time. Here’s our four favorite WordPress 4.0 updates:

  1. Plugin Installer and Media Gallery Visual Updates
WordPress 4.0’s new installer visual update presents a more usable grid view which provides more information and makes it easier to navigate. Before final launch, expect cleaned up headers and design tweaks.
As with the Plugin Installer, the Media Gallery is also getting an updated Grid View, which evolved from a community stand-alone project. This addition makes the content editing system more fluid as well as providing access to a modal popup.
  2. Automatic Resizing Visual Composer
If you have ever typed up a blog post in WordPress and wanted to add media or a URL link, you can understand how frustrating it can be having to scroll back up to the toolbar. In WordPress 4.0 the Toolbar automatically moves with the body of the post eliminating much of the frustration with editing media-heavy posts. This may be one of the most looked forward upgrades for Bloggers. If you want to try it out for yourself I have provided a link at the bottom.
  3. Widgets Theme Customizer Tab
In 4.0, in the Theme Customizer the Widgets section finally gets its own tab, allowing you to easily manage your widgets as they are integrated into your website. This isn’t a huge change but it improves clarity and organization.
  4. Language Selection
International developers can now select what language the site will be in at installation. WordPress is also making it easier to install languages throughout the design process, so dealing with overseas clients, developers or users will be more straightforward. Keeping the WordPress backend in the native language of the user will allow WordPress to quickly expand into international markets.
